Red Celia, 1984 depicts Celia Birtwell, one of David Hockney’s lifelong friends and most important muses, shown seated with both hands resting on her head. In this work, Celia is rendered in an introspective, almost melancholic state, her large eyes cast downward and her expression subdued, creating a sense of quiet emotional depth. The loose, expressive lines and gestural marks give the figure a sense of immediacy, as if captured in a fleeting moment of thought.

Unlike many of Hockney’s more vibrant, multi-coloured compositions, Red Celia is executed in a striking monochromatic red palette. This limited colour scheme heightens the emotional intensity of the portrait, focusing attention on form, line, and expression rather than decorative colour. The result is a powerful and intimate image that emphasises Hockney’s ability to convey mood and character through minimal yet highly controlled means.

“In art, new ways of seeing mean new ways of feeling; you can’t divorce the two, as we are now aware, you can't have time without space and space without time.”
